San Francisco - City by the Bay

I have to tell you, San Francisco has to be one of my all time favorite places. I LOVE it! We have had the opportunity to visit there twice in the past 2 years and I would go again in a heartbeat.

Our first visit we stayed in the Union Square District. Our hotel was tall and fabulous with our room overlooking Union Square. What a fascinating city! We chose not to rent a car and I'm glad we didn't. Driving is nothing short of scary there. What with there narrow streets, hills and curves not to mention buses, streetcars and people, people, people.

We only had 2 days there for we were on route to Hawaii. I have to admit, had the whole vacation been spent in San Francisco I would not have been disappointed. We took a bus tour of the bay area including of course the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge. What a thrill to see it in person. Our first trip out there we didn't actually drive over the bridge, a regret I quickly corrected on our next trip out.

Bring comfy shoes for you will walk and walk and walk. The people are amazing there, they are so fit. I'm not young but I'm certainly not over the hill yet but people twice my age where passing me by like I was standing still. Of course, it doesn't help that I come from an area that claims garbage dumps and overpasses as our highest points!

I recommend using an online service such as Priceline to book your reservations. For us, it was a tremendous savings and the hotel was top notch. I also recommend using the hotel shuttle service rather than a cab to get you to and from the airport. We found out after the fact that we could have saved over half the amount by doing this.

The cable cars are a must do when visiting the city but beware, it's not always easy to hop aboard. Our first trip out, they were on strike and only one line was active. It took us the entire day to be able to ride but I wasn't about to leave without doing it. Just to hum the Rice a Roni song I listened to as a child brought a smile to my face.

If you ever get a notion to visit this beautiful City by the Bay don't pass up the thought. It is a definite must see!
