Auckland-A Mini Guide to Auckland New Zealand

Auckland is the largest urban area in New Zealand. The city is located in the north of the country and it boasts a population of 1.3 million. Auckland is treated to a warm, pleasant climate that never sees any snow. Māori people settled the city in 1350 and it was given the name Tāmaki Maku Rau, (meaning isthmus of one thousand lovers). The main tribes in the city were the Ngāti Whātua and the Tainui, however following the arrival of Europeans, the Māori population declined dramatically. Following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, Auckland was officially colonised by Britain and the city began to grow rapidly.

Auckland spans the volcanoes of the Auckland Volcanic Field and as a result it boasts some of the worlds most beautiful and unusual scenery. Popular excursions for nature lovers include, a trip to the summit of Mount Eden, which offers stunning views of the city. Another destination often visited by tourists is One Tree Hill (also known as Maungakiekie) ? an impressive volcanic cone overlooking Auckland. Hiking isn?t the only outdoor activity popular in Auckland, locals and tourists are renowned for enjoying water sports. The city is known by many as the ?City of Sails? and tourists are offered ample opportunity to enjoy the warm Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. Auckland is home to some stunning beaches, such as Mission Bay, Takapuna and Maraetai, while Piha and Muriwai offer wonderful surfing opportunities.

For those looking for a less adventurous break, Auckland is a famous shopping destination, with a huge variety of shops, from department stores to designer fashion, unusual boutiques to flea markets. Once all the shopping has been done, the city offers visitors numerous charming cafes, not least in the Ponsonby area, where tourists are spoilt for choice when looking for a cosy spot to watch the world go by.
