An Introduction To Kauai
Kauai is an island in Pacific Ocean. It covers an area of around 550 square miles. It takes a half-hour flight from Honolulu to reach here. The origin of this historic island dates back six million years. Hence, it is considered to be one of the oldest Hawaiian Islands. It is one of the eight main islands in the Hawaiian chain.
The legend is that Polynesian gods from Tahiti were the first inhabitants of this island. It is also considered one of the first Hawaiian Islands that was inhabited by human beings. Geographically, it can be broadly divided the north shore, south shore, east side, west side and Lihue and Kalapaki.
The island was first discovered by Captain James Cook and his crew in 1778. Captain Cook and his party are known to have stayed on the island for around five days, and enjoyed the hospitality of native Hawaiians.
Kaumuali was the last king of this island. He died in 1810. During his reign, Russians built a fort here. After his death, missionaries, sugar planters and large numbers of immigrants from Asia and Europe shaped the modern history of this island.
Tourism is the main industry of Kauai. Its landscape is spectacular, and it has wonderful beaches and mountains. That is why it is a hot destination for moviemakers and television crews, too. The semi-tropical climate makes this island suitable for various outdoor activities around the year. During the daytime the temperature hovers around 88 degrees Fahrenheit, and comes down to around 60 in the evening, accompanied by cool breezes from the seashores.
Kauai has some of the best Hawaiian golf courses. Most of them also offer serene oceanic views. Visitors to this wonderful island can go for camping, biking, fishing, horseback riding, and hiking. Daily flights are available for reaching Kauai.
