Arizona Exposition and State Fair

Phoenix, Arizona comes alive in mid-October as its State Fair starts the three weeks of exposition and entertainment that young and old anticipate throughout the year. With 122 years of history under its belt, the Arizona Exposition and State Fair has developed into one of the country?s more evolved venues.

This state fair highlights the cultural contributions of Mexican and Native American ethnic groups as well the contemporary ranchers of the region. Phoenix itself is a bustling metropolitan area of 3.9 million people and the fair is an event of the caliber one would expect in a sizable city.

Arizona shares a 389-mile border with Mexico and Phoenix is truly an international city. Its exposition and state fair offer an all Native American Rodeo, barrel horse racing, figure eight auto racing and the midway carnival atmosphere, complete with rides and food that attract many of its visitors.

The grandstand first-come-first-serve seating is free with fair admission to the long list of mostly country western acts. Reserve seating is priced according to individual performers? fees. A demolition derby and arm wrestling championship are among the less than professional entertainment. Detailed 4-H judging categories and community categories such as ?best quilt? offer good natured competition.

Phoenix is an easily accessed destination with its Sky Harbor International Airport hosting 23 airlines. Hotel and motels representing most major chains are within a few miles of the airport. Major highways lead to this desert city for those who prefer to see America en route. Rental cars, taxi, limousine and bus services are available from most locations within the city.

This city has the dubious distinction of having more days over 100 degrees per year than any other major metropolitan area in the United States. Pack accordingly and don?t be caught without sunscreen or you may end up looking like a baked potato.
