Things to do and see in Budapest in autumn
Autumn is the time for grape harvests so a range of wine tasting events and harvest festivals takes place in and around Budapest in September-October.
The largest is the International Wine and Champagne Festival (1st - 15th September 2006). You can sample great wines from the best Hungarian wine makers and from international wine producers as well. A perfect opportunity to have weekend break in Budapest at the time of the core event of the festival which is the Wine Exhibition and Fair in the Castle District (6th-10th September 2006). You can combine sightseeing with wine tasting all in one place up in the Buda Castle.

- Septemberfest, an event lesser-known by tourists takes place between 1st- 3d September 2006 in the B?kay Garden. Jazz, folklore and other light music concerts, art exhibitions, children programmes entertain the guests. You can taste variants of Hungarian stew and vote for the best one in the stew cooking competition.
- Within the Budapest Wine and Gastro Days (15th - 24th September 2006) 19 restaurants introduce the Hungarian cuisine and the country?s finest wines to tourists.
- The Budapest Autumn Festival (6th-20th October 2006) is the main cultural event in Budapest in autumn. The two-week festival is packed with contemporary art events and performances.
- This year the Cultural Heritage Days (16th - 17th September 2006) focuse on the architecture of the social-realist era (1945-1960).
- For some earnest cultural night out reserve a ticket in time for the monumental performance of the Aida in the State Opera House (29th November 8 pm).

- Take a walk on the grand Andr?ssy Avenue lined with elegant villas, trendy caf?s and old, mighty trees.
- Climb up the top of the Gellert Hill on its meandering paths and admire the stunning vista with the mighty Danube flowing down below.
- Devote at least half a day to visit the attractions (Matthias Church, Fishermen?s Bastion, the Royal Palace) in the Castle District. Stop by the oldest confectionery, Ruszwurm on Szenth?roms?g Street.
- Should you miss the International Wine Festival in the beginning of September you can taste wines from Hungary?s 22 wine regions and learn about the history of wine growing in the House of Hungarian Wines.
Although the so-called Indian summer in the beginning of autumn reward us with plenty of sunshine you can still count on some rain. Here are a few tips on things to do in Budapest on those wet days:
- Pop in the Museum of Fine Arts on Heroes? Square to visit the Rembrandt 400 exhibition (open until 25th September 2006).
- Have a dip in a thermal bath (Kir?ly Bath, Sz?chenyi Bath, Gell?rt Bath): while relaxing in the steamy hot water admire the architectural masterpieces.
- Sip a coffee and munch a delicious Hungarian cake in a historic coffee house.
Shopping in Budapest
The Great Market Hall is great place to buy special Hungarian food stuff and souvenirs. A vivid interior awaits you inside with the lines of stalls dressed up by the colourful cavalcade of seasonal produce: red paprika, bunch of grapes, apples, plums, tomatoes, pickels, mushroom, garlic and onion strings. Get some traditional Hungarian salami, sweet paprika powder and fine wine or p?linka, the authentic Hungarian fruit brandy.
Upstairs you can have hearty Hungarian dishes or nibble some l?ngos (deep fried dough), fried sausage with a mug of draught beer. Budapest has several modern shopping malls as well if you want to buy fashionable clothes, jewelry, books or high-tech gadgets.
Budapest shows its most photogenic face in autumn. This time the sunlight creates spectacular colours. Sometimes you can experience a certain hazy atmosphere that creates a certain mysterious, but at the same time breath-taking aura in the streets of the city. A great time to take some stunning photos!
